Sleep hygiene includes educating the patients about lifestyle modifications like limiting the daytime naps, avoiding late night dinner or evening intake of alcohol, caffeine, or smoking. However, it is not indicated in the initial assessment of primary insomnia unless a co-existing sleep disorder is suspected. Polysomnography is the preferred method in the diagnosis of a variety of sleep disorders including sleep apnea, sleep-related hypoventilation, and parasomnias. One of the limitations associated with this device is that it cannot access the periodic limb movements (PLM) or abnormal breathing pattern in insomnia in which case polysomnography is indicated to assess the other sleep disorders associated with insomnia. The various sleep parameters assessed by actigraphy are total sleep duration, wakefulness after sleep onset (WASO), sleep latency and daytime naps. Wrist actigraph is a noninvasive device used to record the gross motor activity during the daytime and sleep. The only major limitation associated with the sleep log is the reliability and validity of its documentation. Sleep logs are used to determine the total sleep time (TST), wakefulness after sleep onset (WASO), sleep efficiency (SE), and circadian rhythm disturbances. Sleep logs are maintained for 2 to 4 weeks and also include documentation of alcohol and caffeine consumption, bedtime activities, and daytime napping. Sleep logs/diaries are reliable and cost-effective ways to assess the sleep-wake cycle in an individual. The most widely used ones are Epworth Sleepiness Scale (from 0 to 24 with a score of more than 15 indicating severe daytime sleepiness) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (poor sleep score of greater than 5). Self-evaluating questionnaires and assessment scales are helpful to document sleep disturbances and the quality of sleep. The initial laboratory workup should include thyroid function tests, glycosylated hemoglobin, complete blood count, serum iron studies, liver function tests, and renal function tests. The laboratory test can provide a supportive data to evaluate the underlying medical conditions that can be associated with insomnia. Other sleep-related disorders like restless leg syndrome (RLS), sleep apnea, periodic limb movements, nocturnal leg cramps can contribute to seep fragmentation and should be evaluated during the clinical encounter. Inquiring about the sleep hygiene practices (activities performed just before bedtime including nighttime consumption of alcohol and caffeinated beverages, use of electronic gadgets at bedtime and frequency of daytime naps) can also be helpful to determine the ways to mitigate the sleep disturbances. Patients with underlying depression may have symptoms of waking up too early in the morning (early morning insomnia) and should be screened for the same. The clinician should be able to identify if the sleep disturbances are from difficulty in initiating sleep or maintaining sleep or both. The management plan for chronic insomnia should involve comprehensive evaluation that includes a history of sleep-related disturbances, associated underlying medical and/or psychiatric problems, medications or other sleep-related disorders.Ī detailed sleep history is essential for the evaluation of insomnia. The sleep disturbances have been present for over a period of 3 months.ĭifficulty in initiating or maintaining sleep that does not meet the criteria of chronic insomnia or short-term insomnia disorder. The sleep disturbances occur at least three times a week and have been present for the last 3 months. Insomnia is also considered a contributing risk factor for medical problems like cardiovascular diseases, chronic pain syndrome, depression, anxiety, diabetes, obesity, and asthma.Īccording to the third edition of the International Classification of Sleep Disorder, insomnia is classified as: Chronic insomnia can adversely affect the health, quality of life, academic performance, increase the risk of motor vehicle accidents, decrease the productivity at work, irritability and increase daytime sleepiness. These symptoms occur despite the presence of adequate opportunity and circumstance for sleep and result in daytime dysfunction. According to the third edition of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD-3), insomnia is characterized by difficulty in either initiating sleep, maintaining sleep continuity, or poor sleep quality. Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder in the United States affecting about one-third of the general population.

Battery and Jump Starter Cables Connecting Order Knowing this is very important - when connecting the battery to the battery, or jump starter to the battery, if they are short-circuited, huge currents (thousands of currents) will melt the insulation within seconds and most probably start a fire - that is how these cables can get hot if something is connected in the wrong way. jump starters: positive cable (again, commonly with the alligator clamps) is the red one and is connected to the battery's positive (red) terminal, and the negative cable is connected to the battery's negative terminal (black). jumper cables: positive cable (commonly with the alligator clamps) is the red one and is connected to the positive (red) battery terminal, and the negative cable is the black one and is connected to the negative (black) battery terminal, battery terminals: positive terminal post is the red one, negative battery terminal post is negative, To keep things as simple as possible, remember that the red is positive and that the black is negative: Not knowing such information can be dangerous since car batteries and jump starters are able to provide huge currents, even when not fully charged. When connecting batteries, jump starters, jumper cables, and similar to the car's or similar batteries, it is very important to know which cable and terminal post are positive and which ones are negative.Īlso, it is very important to know which one to connect or disconnect first. However, it was a transitional period for TV, and the show ends up strongly implying that Mundy manages to have a sex life anyway (and this progressive scamp is willing to flirt with women of every race and nation). With his cameras, Noah personifies the broadcast standards of his day: tease and tantalize with voyeuristic promise but don’t go through with it. Closed-circuit monitors in the mansion are meant to ensure that Mundy never gets anywhere with the she-keepers, lest Noah show up glowering and barking like a dyspeptic producer annoyed with his star. For a nod at credibility, at least Noah is always bitching about his budget. For his cover as an international playboy (and noted thief? for plot purposes, he can be either), he lives in a mansion and must be seen at casinos on the arms of beautiful women. The show isn’t coy about naming the Cold War enemy, although it often invents foreign nations for its antics. So Noah Bain springs Mundy on parole and keeps him on a tight leash, always threatening to bounce him back into stir if he fails to pull off some heist from a foreign embassy or retrieve a defector or double agent from the Soviets or the Red Chinese. It’s fair to say the producers don’t really want it to sink in. If we want to steal something, let’s have a thief.” If you let that elitist pragmatism sink in, it opens the possibility of a subversive, satirical critique. The best people for that are thieves and murderers. In the pilot, he glibly summarizes the premise thusly: “Espionage today is mainly larceny and homicide. He’s a chief of the SIA, which is supposed to be the CIA without coming out and saying it. The balding, gruff, almost snarling Bain looks a bit like an angry doorknob. On the day he executes an ingenious escape attempt, he discovers he’s been tapped for service by Noah Bain (Malachi Throne), the ex-cop who arrested him. He plays suave anti-hero Al Mundy, who enjoys a reputation as a world-class thief, a glamorous burglar, a black-garbed dangler from skylights over fabulous jewels in closely-guarded museums, a spinner of combination locks with his ear to the tumblers, not to mention a pickpocket’s pickpocket. The series was a vehicle for Robert Wagner in his niche as a handsome TV-friendly leading man who avoids overly heavy material. The box contains all three seasons plus a few bonuses, and we shall stroll through the summery maze of its garden with our magnifying glass in one hand and pinking shears in the other, a manservant following behind with a tall cool beverage on a silver salver. Some shows come out on DVD a season at a time, or even half a season, but not this one. A product of TV’s schizophrenic late ’60s, It Takes a Thief is a light-hearted escapist adventure that ran on America’s ABC network from January 1969 to March 1970. His work can be seen in many public and private collections including the Museum of Nebraska Art. While barbed wire is placed between each layer to act as mortar and reinforcement, plaster is often added to protect from erosion. Inspired by traditional earth architecture and adapted for modern usage, it utilizes sandbags filled with moistened earth and arranged in layers or long coils. While wood, concrete and glass are still mostly used on rectangular buildings, other materials – especially natural materials used in permaculture design – can actually work better in curved surfaces because of load distribution.įor example, Nader Khalili’s Superadobe technique is very effective for curved designs. Save this picture! Kering Offices / FR-EE / Fernando Romero Enterprise. In addition, researchers have developed a new method that takes advantage of wood’s natural swelling and contraction to make panels bend. On the other hand, with the Kerfing technique, large non-structural parts are curved with spaced cuts. By gluing segments of wood following a curved mold, the material can be bent. For large structural pieces, using Glued Laminated Wood is the most popular method. Steam Bending, for example, consists of heating wood in a steambox until it becomes malleable and then securing it in a mold so that, after it cools, it remains in a curved shape. But with traditional and modern techniques, it is possible to achieve the desired curvature. To inspire architects, we present these with a compilation of beautiful projects where curved walls, ceilings and partitions come to life to create gracious and dynamic spaces.īecause wooden architecture most commonly uses straight, standard-sized beams and panels, it can be complex to bend. With this in mind, below we explore innovative techniques used to bend traditional building materials. Save this picture! Wood Ribbon Apartment / Toledano+Architects. Nonetheless, technical expertise on materials is still crucial in order to achieve good results. And thanks to new technologies like 3D construction printing and BIM, it has never been easier to visualize and build complex curved geometries. They can add movement, zone creatively, act as furniture pieces and even create load-bearing walls. In short, humans love curves.īut besides their beauty – and contrary to common belief – curved surfaces can also adopt many functions. In fact, neuroscientists have shown that this affection is hard-wired into the brain in a 2013 study, they found that participants were most likely to consider a space beautiful if it was curvilinear instead of rectilinear. Adopting beautiful nature-inspired shapes, organic curls and bends energize rooms and make users feel good. In that sense, the power of curved, free-flowing surfaces is unmatched, which explains why they have been making a comeback as a modern design trend. However, the pandemic has shed light on designs that are not only functional, but also that improve our mood and well-being. Whether it be walls, beams or windows, most architectural elements come in standard and extremely practical orthogonal shapes. Chances are you are envisioning flat rectangular surfaces and straight lines. Take a second to imagine a building or a room. Orlando Arocena illustrates, using only vectors, for the largest entrainment companies in the world.Ĭhris Do sits down with master illustrator Orlando to talk about: Master illustrator, Orlando Arocena, uses basic tools and old school painting techniques to create amazing works of art! You won’t believe what he can do in under an hour, with beautiful vectors. Cheers. What you think is an oil painting is anything but. Apologies for the long explanation, but I hope this helps. To experiment, I placed my map image, then one of my own photos, then an image from the web and they all allowed me to use the brush tool. Then once it is open, choose "File-Place", select your image and away you go - the brush tool and any other tool you need to use will work. So the thing to do is to go to "File-New", in the dialog box click on the "Profile" drop down menu and choose "Print" and just adjust the other settings to suit your project. Then thanks to David Neely's comment about creating a new document using the web profile, I got the inspiration to think "Why wouldn't the same work using the other profiles available"? So I tried them and they worked. I hand drew a map, then scanned it into my computer, but like you, when I opened it up in Illustrator, I couldn't use the brush tool. For example, for a brochure design that I have just completed, I had to create my own map from scratch (the client didn't want to use google maps), which needed to include arrows that were straight and curved in all directions, so Illustrator is best for that. I haven't used Illustrator for a while, so I forgot how to do a few things, which is why I've been searching some blogs like this one for some answers as well.Īs others have said, Photoshop is the best tool for specific photo editing tasks, however, sometimes you want to add things to an image that Illustrator is better designed to do. If not, I thought I would answer your question. Hope this clarifies things!Īs you asked this question 11 months ago, you most likely would have solved this problem by now. To sum it up, you don't use Illustrator to modify images, you use it to make entirely new ones, which requires a slightly different approach. After this is done, Illustrator will let you draw on top of the image, and when you're finished, you can save the project and export it or render it as a brand new graphic. In order to do this, you should create a new project using the 'Web' profile, then open import or copy and paste the image into the new project. It sounds like, in Illustrator terms, what you really want to do is create an entirely new graphic, one which makes use of an image you downloaded from the Internet. In order to understand why it isn't letting you do this right off the bat, you should understand the philosophy behind Illustrator's intended use, which is that instead of modifying an image like you would a raster-based (pixel) graphic in Photoshop or GIMP, Illustrator is intended for actually creating brand new graphics and designs which can be rendered into images. It sounds like your goal is to use Illustrator's vector-based drawing to modify an image. You can also turn your raster layer invisible easily to check how your vector is progressing. This is very handy for those who work/trace on top of placed raster art: you lock the sub-layer with the raster (I prefer to move it to a separate bottom layer altogether), and you work with your vector brushes and pens and whatever in other layers. Notice that, in the Layers panel, when you drop down the image layer, you'll see that your Brush-drawn object is now a separate sub-layer. Click on the arrow in the corner of the “Brushes” box, and select “Open brush library.” Pick a style, which will show up as a tab in the box, and your brush will work. If it’s empty, you haven’t chosen a calligraphic style for your brush. Go to the menu and select Window –> Brushes to open the little “Brushes” window. The solution I found on TopBrushes went like this: I found some solution elsewhere so I'll share it. I use the Pen tool 99% of the time and it works fine, so I haven't noticed this issue until recently, when I went searching for solutions and found this post. And, like you said, when you open a raster image in Illustrator, the Brush tool is deactivated. So I need to place vector on top of my raster image. However, I myself often use raster scans, typically JPG, as drafts for my vector illustrations. As others have said, Illustrator is not the right tool for editing "images from the internet" (which are normally raster). That means the key here is to start your car in the right way and properly time your gear shifting.īut before you do that, you’ll need to buy your first car with the $40,000 you are given to make a purchase at the dealership - you will only need $30,000, though, to buy any of the Modern or Retro cars that are available in the Dealership menu. The setup is similar - it’s purely drag racing here with no road racing, so you don’t need to worry about braking or turning. If you’ve played games such as those in the CSR series, then you probably need little introduction to the basic mechanics of No Limit Drag Racing 2. Now, this guide is more than just about the tuning - our No Limit Drag Racing 2 guide covers everything you need to know about the game’s main features and mechanics, with lots of tips and tricks that could be most helpful to beginners and intermediate players, but also some that expert players might even be able to use from time to time. This is especially true when it comes to the tuning aspect, which we’ll emphasize soon enough is probably the most important aspect of the game. Much like the average high-end racing game of its kind, this title comes with a comparatively steep learning curve once you’ve gotten past the basic mechanics of starting your car and shifting gears. You can compete against the AI in Career mode or against other real-life players in multiplayer races, customize your car in any which way you wish, and make the necessary upgrades to make it a more formidable threat on the drag strip. These include more options for tuning and customization, improved racing physics, and more vehicles and other content. The company recently released No Limit Drag Racing 2 for iOS and Android users and the new version comes with all the great features that made the first edition so good. Autonoma is a company that’s best known for racing games such as Pro Series Drag Racing and Offroad Outlaws, though you may be more familiar with another such franchise from that genre - No Limit Drag Racing. |
